03.後ろの詰まる音

日本でよくテレビのテロップなどに出ますよね。「オーマイガー」。

これで、ひと騒動ありました。私がこれを言ったら「それ何？」と聞かれてしまいました。

Sarah: Are you saying “Oh my God?”

　（あなた、オーマイゴッドって言ったの？）

Michiko: Yes, that is what I said.

　（そういったのよ) ※これ、当時、覚えたての言い方でした！

Sarah: Your sound is not like you said.

　（ちょっとちがうのよ）

It may be because of your pronunciations for “G” and last “D.”

　（それはたぶんGと最後のDの発音の問題の問題ね）　　　             

There are several way of pronunciation for “G” sound.  I admit that. So, that is not making confusion.

　（Gの発音については、人によりいくつかの発音があるは、それは問題ないのよ～）　

But, the sound of last “D” is causing problem.

　（おしまいのDの音が問題なのよ。）

See, a lot of my Japanese friend can’t pronounce “T” and “D” in the end of the word.　That’s bother me a lot.

　（私の日本人の友達は、みんな単語の終わりのTやDの発音ができないのよ～。それがすごく耳障りなのよね）

Those last “D” and “t” may not be sound alike those are pronounced.　But they are there.　

　（単語の終わりのDやTは発音していないように聞こえるけど、そこにあるのよ。）If you can’t pronounced them, that is okay, you would just make your mouth like you are pronouncing.　That would make big difference.

　（もし、発音できなければ、それはそれでいいから口だけでも発音しているようにつくっとくべきよ。)

Michiko: Is it important? 

　（それって大事なの？）

Sarah: Well, if you keep pronouncing as you are now, you would sound like you are foreigner.  That means you would never get trusted as you are people who living here.  If it is okay for you, you would never mind what I just said.

　（そうね～今の発音を続けてたら、貴方は外人よ。ここに住んでいる人としての信用はもらえないわ。それでいいなら気にしないで。）

But, if you want to get trusted as we are, you definitely need to learn this point.

　（もし、あなたが私たちのような信用を得たかったら、きちんと発音することは絶対に必要よ）

Michiko:  Okay I would definitely try.

≪その当時、三戸先生からもらったアドバイス≫

日本人が欧米人と仲良くなろうとして、彼らが使っているスラングを自分の耳に聞こえるようにそのまま発音するのは、欧米人にはとても可愛く、ときには滑稽に聞こえる。単語の後ろについているDやTは、日本人に殆ど聞こえないことがあるが、その前の音で終わってよいわけではない。特に今テレビのテロップにでる「オーマイガ～」を日本人がそのまま発音してしまうと、ちょっと違うどころではなく、間違った発音と言える程、ネイティブの発音とかけ離れた悪い発音になってしまう。このような単語の例としては、Dot, Perot, Chevrolet, fruit, などがある。
